Scopely Acquires FoxNext Games Los Angeles and Cold Iron Studios from Disney

WWE Champions publisher Scopely acquired two studios from Disney — FoxNext Games Los Angeles and Cold Iron Studios — for an undisclosed sum.

Mobile game developer Scopely bought MARVEL Strike Force developer FoxNext Games Los Angeles and San Jose-based Cold Iron Studios from Disney.

Fox Next Games is best known for releasing Marvel Strike Force, its debut title, in 2018. The studio is working on a massively multiplayer strategy game, Avatar: Pandora Rising, based on the movie Avatar.

Cold Iron Studios, on the other hand, is working on a first-person shooter game for consoles and PC based on the sci-fi series Alien. However, Scopely plans to put the studio up for sale after completing the acquisition.

The financial details of the deal were not disclosed. However, the sale does not include the intellectual property licenses to Fox game titles, which will remain with Disney’s game publishing business.

FoxNext Games Los Angeles and Cold Iron Studios became part of Disney in March of last year as part of the company’s $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox. After completing the transaction, Scopely will own two of the three studios under Disney’s FoxNext Games. The third studio, Storyscapes creator Fogbank Entertainment, was not included in the sale.
